Eco School

Breaking news!        11th May 2010

Our congratulations goes to year 5 for helping us to plan a superb outdoor classroom that will mean that we can all enjoy learning in the great outdoors with seating for an entire class! This was as part of a competition entry for Aspire Housing's 10th Anniversary competition.

We have just recieved confirmation that our school is one of three schools to win this fantastic competition and the site surveyors are visiting our school shortly to provide more information on how this will actually happen!

This is an amazing achievement and we are really proud of year 5 for working hard with such motivation. Well done!!

Our Green Flag

As I am sure you are aware , we were awarded our Green Flag in June 2008. We have now finally got permission to fly our flag on an outdoor flag pole. Our caretaker—Mr Cameron has kindly put our flag pole in our Breathing Place garden and we are planning to raise our flag at lunchtime on Wednesday19th May 2010.

This is an exciting and proud day for us, as our whole community can see our achievements!

Green flag renewal

Our Green Flag award expires in June and so we are applying

for our renewal at the moment. We all need to continue our hard work to keep our school litter free and we need to remember to care for our vegetables and plants, and make sure we are as wildlife friendly as possible. This is an exciting time for us—and we really need everyone's support to make sure we keep our Green Flag.

Bag 2 School

We are planning another Bag 2 School Collection for this June. Please help us by starting to gather clothes that can be donated to help us raise money to help us to continue our environmental work in school.

Big Wildlife Garden

The eco council have been successful in our application to gain Big Wildlife Garden status.

We have gained our Green award which is the best we can be. To gain this award we have had to show that we are wildlife friendly by providing food and shelter as well as growing a variety of  plants and vegetables. We have also written a poem and an essay about our garden as part of a garden challenge.

Our plaque to celebrate our success has arrived and Mr Cameron, our caretaker is kindly putting this up in our garden this week.

Our essay and poem are shown on our notice boards in the entrance and in our garden.

Our vegetable Garden

Each class has planted some potatoes , beans or beetroot in our vegetable garden. We also have tomato and strawberry plants that have been given to us by Homebase that will be ready for planting soon. All of the produce grown will be donated to our school kitchen or sold to help to raise funds for our projects.

Our Greenhouse

Unfortunately our greenhouse has suffered through wind damage and has had to be removed. We hope to use money that we have raised to buy a new greenhouse in the near future so that we can grow a range of salad crops as well as our other vegetables that we have already planted.

Our Memorial Garden

We have started to create a new memorial garden next to the school playground. The Morrisons ‘Lets Grow’ scheme provided our planters and soil (so thank you for bringing your vouchers into school).

Each class have planted their own selection of seeds which we hope will grow into beautiful flowers.

We hope our memorial garden when it is finished will be a quiet and calm space to reflect.

Potatoes 4 Schools

Our foundation stage children are growing potatoes for a competition.

The aim is to grow the biggest crop of potatoes possible from the seed potatoes provided.

We look forwards to hearing how they get on and wish them luck!
